Though OS may be vulnerable the hardware systems are more foolproof, for example the SoC in mobiles have in-built security systems, that makes the operating system processes enter and exit secure mode periodically. There is a secure watchdog timer with it, which needed to be restarted with in the stipulated time failing which results in a boot. and installation process also includes authenticity checking, using SHA, TDES mechanism for checking of every process that is being executed in a mobile system, the private key for the same is owned by nokia (say, for example) alone, failing which results in a boot. Also the boot code is checked for authenticity as mentioned above. So at any time, the processes or softwares that are duly endorsed by nokia alone can be executed or installed in a mobile system.

The above way is not present in the current mobile systems but they will be included in 3G mobile phones, so its safer from trojan i believe.

Wow!! I got a visitor here. Vijay, Smartphones are the target these days. Bluetooth is the means of transport for the trojans and viruses. It is as simple as a virus affecting a PC. Though the hardware is so secure you just can't rule out the possibility of a virus affecting the not-so-secure OS and applications running on it.

machi, in gist, no other software other than those endorsed by nokia can run on nokia smartphones because of the existing security mechanism, even new software downloaded through bluetooth will be checked for authenticity of whether its endorsed software. Even genuine softwares(non-virus) not endorsed by nokia cannot run on the phones.

Vijay, Don't you think that's wrong to restrict an application from installing into someone's phone? It is pure attrocity towards a user. It will be like asking permission to M$ b4 installing winamp. If thats the case then Nokia will go in ruins soon.
